Making Lemonade (not just for Beyonce)
In the children's section of my local library, I came across a glorious book called Lemonade and Other Poems Squeezed from a Single Word by Bob Raczka. As the title suggests, the author composes poems from the letters in just one word. (Lemonade, moonlight, breakfast, etc.) "Vacation" becomes "Action/ in/ a van." "Friends" is "Fred/ finds/ Ed." The squeezed word yields the fruit.
I loved Boggle as a kid, so I had to start writing Lemonade poems of my own. It's hard to stop! And it's an ideal way to make the words flow as the season heats up.
June writing exercise: Make yourself some lemonade! Then consider the word "summertime." List all possible words you can make from the letters s-u-m-m-e-r-t-i-m-e. Choose words from your list (as many or few as you like) to make a poem.
