The Ideal Present
When I feel distracted or out of sorts, there's one activity that consistently brings me back to myself: swimming. I’ve loved the sensation of being in water since I was a child in Maine, where I learned to stay afloat in very chilly tides. I’m lucky to live in the Berkshires now, with lakes galore. Swimming allows me to be “present" with all sensations and thoughts, whether pleasant or unpleasant. How challenging that can be. And how useful for a writing practice. August writing exercise: What activities or pastimes makes you feel most like yourself? (Reading? Skydiving? Juggling? Knitting?) What makes you feel fully present and how do you get there? Describe this in detail. Give yourself 10 minutes and GO. If 10 minutes turns into 20, so be it.
