Balance
Last week I strolled along a scenic coastline in Maine with my husband. The fog rolled in and we came upon these remarkable stone cairns, balanced just so.
"Did you build them?" asked a passerby.
"No," I said, though I was tempted to fib. I would like to have the patience and equanimity to construct such a sculpture. I would like to be a maker of balance.
We took many photos. When faced with precarious elements (see daily news), I want to keep these stones in mind.
September writing exercise: Take a deep breath. Then find your pen and journal. Recall a time when you felt balance in your life. (Perhaps it's now!) What does this entail for you? How can you cultivate equilibrium? What are the building blocks that make the steady cairn? Give yourself ten minutes or so to freewrite. (You have my permission to be messy.) If ten minutes turns into 20, so be it.
