Ode to the Newt
Yesterday, I saw 31 red-spotted newts on the damp path near my house. I'm fascinated by these creatures--amphibians, I should say. They're born in water, spend 5 years wandering on land as juveniles, and then return to wetlands to breed, having changed from red-orange to olive-green. I'm struck by their ability to adapt from water to land to water, one phase to the next.
JUNE WRITING EXERCISE: Consider a time when you had to adapt--to a new place, job or person. What was this like for you? Try freewriting without censorship. Let yourself be messy. Set a timer and write for 10 minutes. If 10 turns into 20, so be it.
