Getting Out of the Mud

Dear Writers,
Two days ago, I had the honor and thrill of sitting in Herman Melville's study, right next to the desk where he composed Moby Dick. "Arrowhead," as his home in Pittsfield, MA is called, is now a marvelous museum dedicated to all things Melville. I was there because of the Berkshire Festival of Women Writers and had the chance to scribble for a time, looking out at the muddy pasture and Mount Greylock beyond, the view that inspired visions of the whale. How easy it was to write in that space. Of course, the next day I was back at my kitchen table, looking at my own muddy yard. Such is the rhythm of daily practice.
